After two hard-fought games against the Tamaraws, Pumaren and his defending champion Green Archers are returning to the finals of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament following a tense 67-62 triumph in the Final Four of the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last September 14, 2008 at the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum.
Forward James Mangahas, one of Pumaren’s old reliables over at Taft Avenue, delivered the telling blows that landed DLSU its 13th finals appearance in the last 15 seasons, scoring six of his game-high 20 points in the final minute of the game.
After Marc Baracael split his charities to put the Tamaraws on the driver’s seat for the last time, 62-61, with still 1:28 left, Mangahas responded on the other end by completing a three-point play off a foul by Reil Cervantes.
Moments after De La Salle sneaked its way to finals, Ateneo de Manila didn’t wait too long to join its nemesis to forge yet another blockbuster championship showdown.
Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle will meet in the finals for the first time since 2002, when the Joel Banal-led Blue Eagles needed three games to wrestle the title away from the Green Archers.
