MANILA, Philippines - What depleted lineup?

Harbour Centre’s quest for a sixth straight championship went into full gear after the Batang Pier dismantled the Pharex Generix 83-66 on the opening day of the Philippine Basketball League PG Flex Linoleum Cup Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Batang Pier, whose resident stars went up to the pros and were left with virtually new faces, started the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to go ahead 75-59 and break the game wide open.

Starting playmaker Mark Barroca’s two freethrows, with 1:42 in the clock, was the game’s final points.

“Pharex is a strong team but we picked up our defense in the middle of the third quarter until the end,” Harbour coach Jorge Gallent said. “That was the critical run.”

Harbour Centre had the upperhand for good after finishing the third period 65-59.

Reed Juntilla had a double-double with 21 points (on nine-of-16 shooting from the field) and 10 rebounds to go with four assists.

Barroca and slotman Reil Cervantes, teammates at Far Eastern University, combined for 25 markers and 11 boards.

“The FEU boys have been relentless in practice,” Gallent gushed. “It was nice to see their hard work pay off.”

Chris Ross, the top pick in the PBL draft, led Generix with across-the-board stats of 21 points, four rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Ronnie Matias chipped in 16 points and 16 rebounds along. - GMANews.TV
